Round 8 Update - Lions Crash Back to Earth
3/6/09

It's fair to say the Lions came crashing back to earth in Rd.8 with three heavy defeats at the hands of the East Coast Eagles.

The Under 18's arrived at Bruce Purser with high hopes of defeating another top 5 side only to be comprehensively defeated by a top notch Eagles side whose accuracy in front of goal was outstanding. The Eagles threatened to blow us away with 6 unanswered goals in the first quarter. The boys looked to be back on track with the opening three goals of the 2nd term, but it was only a brief rally and from there the hosts took complete control to runout huge winners. By the time you read this, I hope to be able to report that the boys have bounced back by getting over Riverview in a midweek catchup game.

Things got worse for the Reserves who were coming off two wins in a row. The boys didn't stop trying but were spanked from start to finish by the reigning premiers. After three good performances in a row at home it was disappointing to play so poorly on the road and is an area we'll need to improve on in the 2nd half of the season. Best wishes to coach Sam Lewis who now jets out for an extended overseas holiday. Lets all get behind Pete Veerhuis and Michael Love who will lead the side, and see if we ca chalk up a few more wins prior to Sam's return late in the season.

The Seniors coming off a win the previous week went into the game with the undefeated ladder leaders with a positive outlook and made a bright start, hanging in against the Eagles in the 1st term despite kicking against a strong breeze. The boys closed to within 3 goals midway through the 2nd term but that's as close as we came with the Eagles steadily pulling away for the remainder of the game. The Lions never stopped trying, despite being reduced to the bare 18 by halftime, the second time we've suffered such a fate this year. Still, our fortunes will eventually turn if we keeping working hard. The bye has given all the players a chance to freshen up, and we'll need to be at our best if we are to challenge Campbelltown today.
