Finals Week 1 - Lion Cubs Win Thriller
02/09/09

The Under 18's won a heartstopper last week advancing from the Elimination Final with a plucky 3-point win over Pennant Hills. It was a great reward for the players and coach Mark Siely, who have worked hard all season. The boys trailed all day but were never more than a couple of goals behind. Despite the closeness of the scores, the young Lions never really got into full stride, and for long stretches it looked as though it was not going to be there day. Trailing by 9, 8 and 11 points at each of the intervals, the boys were still 9 points in arrears with only minutes to go. Then Luke Rutter kicked his 4th goal for the afternoon from long range to give the side a sniff. Another forward entry, a scramble at ground level, before Mark Mura bobbed up to kick a dribbling goal from 25m out. The drama didn't end there as a centre square infringement resulted in a Demons free kick and a last opportunity to snatch the game back. Fortunately for the Lions, time soon ran out and they live to fight another day. The task gets tougher this week as we tackle an East Coast Eagles side looking to rebound from their Qualifying Final defeat. The Eagles well and truly smacked the Lions in there first meeting this year. Two weeks ago the margin was less than 2 goals with a quarter to go before the Eagles ran away with the game. Who knows what will happen in their third meeting? GO LIONS!
