It was not a happy day for the Lions at Mahony Park, the Sunday before last with the Dragons reversing the result from earlier in the season and scoring a win in all three grades.
Â
The Under 18's were minus a coach and several players due to the last minute shift from Saturday to Sunday for the clash with the Dragons. The in form Dragons are a tough enough challenge at any stage, but with no interchange to call on for the entire game, the boys faced on a nigh on impossible task. St George made a flying start and had 5 goals on the board in the blink of an eye. It was more of the same in the 2nd term as the Dragons continued to pile on the goals. The boys responded to a half-time pep talk and pleasingly, were able to win the 3rd quarter. However that effort spent any "petrol tickets" the boys had left and the Dragons kicked away again in the final quarter. It's been a strange season for the boys, finals bound but mostly non-competitive against the top sides. That needs to change in a hurry if our finals campaign is to last for more than a week. Thanks to Dan McClure and Michael Love for coaching the boys in Mark Siely's absence.
The Reserves were also severely depleted by the late fixture change, but by 12pm had assembled 22 players who were looking to make it a 3 week unbeaten spell. St George however were desperate for a 1st win of the year, and after an even opening term, it was the hosts who made the running for the remainder of the day. No question the Dragons were the more desperate and enthusiastic side, and with plenty to play for it was disappointing to be out-enthused on the day. The boys have a fortnight off to refresh for the final 4 weeks of the season, and look forward to a number of players returning from Uni break to bolster the ranks.

The Senior game went very much to the same script for the 2nd week in a row. Our opponents got out to an early lead, and despite always being within striking distance, we never looked like seriously threatening from then on. After a flat couple of weeks, the boys are looking for a spark, and the break has come at an opportune time. Our boys will need to come out a reinvigorated outfit if we are to play spoiler to several teams either destined for, or still in finals contention. An in-form Pennant Hills side is our first test.
