Rd. 13 Review - Lions Gunned Down by Bombers
13/07/09

The Under 18's had the big task of tackling the ladder leading Bombers, and after a slow start, kept up with their highly fancied opponents for much of the first half. However the Bombers showed their class in the 2nd half pouring on 12 goals to 2 to record a dominant victory. Things don't get any easier this week as we tackle the talented Crows. It's another great opportunity for our boys to test themselves against a finals bound opponent, and with a bye to look forward to, there should be no holding back this week.

The Reserves recorded their second important result in as many weeks with a thrilling 1 point win over North Shore. After last weeks draw, the Div.1 boys are certainly testing the nerves of Lions supporters. The boys were undermanned going into the game, but made up for that with a commitment to win the footy that eventually wore down their opponents. After trailing for all of the 1st half, the Lions surged in the 3rd term keeping the Bombers goalless. When the Lions got out to a 20-point lead in the last term they looked safe, but there was a sting in the tail with the Bombers rallying to kick 3 late goals and almost snatch victory back. The boys now face a Dragons side determined to record a first victory for the year.

The Seniors were made to pay dearly for a poor first quarter against a North Shore side clearly fighting for its finals survival. The Bombers booted 8 goals to 2 in the opening term and the Lions were consigned to chasing the game from then on. Try as they might the Lions could not bridge the gap with the Bombers in control for most of the day. The Lions closed to within 2 goals in a marathon final term before the Bombers kicked the sealer. The opening term was a telling reminder that we need to play committed, bold footy for 4 quarters every week to win games of footy, and unfortunately on this day it was the Bombers who were more desperate for victory.
